How to Vote Absentee in 2012

There is no question that Virginia will be a battleground state this November. In 2008, Barack Obama became the first Democrat to carry the Commonwealth since Lyndon Johnson in 1964, and he did it by a margin of 53%-47% over John McCain. This year, Virginia will again be vital to the national outcome.

While Obama scored a 6-point win in the last election, he also blew out Republicans by taking 61% of the absentee ballots. We cannot afford to extend such an edge this time around. To win Virginia this year, we need to ensure those who share our values are able to vote, and if they can’t vote on Election Day, they should vote absentee.

Starting tomorrow, ballots will begin to be mailed out and people can start voting Absentee-In-Person next Monday.

Over the years Absentee Ballot voting has become very easy, but I always find people asking me how they can vote absentee and where to do it.

If any of these scenarios fits you, you qualify to vote absentee:
1. If you are on business or vacation and will be out of town on November 6th
2. If you commute/work outside your home county for more than 11 hours in a day. (i.e. you live in Stafford, and leave for work in DC at 6 AM and get back home at 5:01 PM, you qualify to vote absentee)
3. If you serve in the US Armed Forces
4. If you are a first responder, law enforcement, fire fighter, or rescue personnel
5. If you are a student or married to a student and they attend a school outside of your home county (i.e. you are registered in Midlothian but go to school at JMU in Harrisonburg)
6. You are unable to go to the polls because of a disability/illness/pregnancy/religious obligation
7. If you are a member of the electoral board/registrar/officer of election
8. If you are serving as a designated representative of a political party
9. If you are the primary caretaker of a person who is ill/disabled.

Most people qualify to vote absentee but they just do not know the rules. If you have any questions, please feel free to call my office at 703-436-4527.

Please call the registrar ahead of time if you plan to vote ABSENTEE IN PERSON to ensure they are open. Generally all registrars will be open Monday-Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm if you wish to vote absentee in person.
