Update on Asphalt Plants

I have requested Finley Asphalt and Sealing Company to withdraw its application to build an asphalt facility on Hornbaker Road. I have discussed this with Erick Finley and he indicated that he understood the community questions raised about the location of the facility. He is seriously considering my request and stressed that his family's company has been a part of this community for 40 years, and that your opinion of his company is important to him.

Prince William County needs industrial development, as well as more office and high-end retail, in order to continue to grow and prosper. But it needs to be located in areas that will not interrupt our quality of life. Furthermore, this situation has highlighted the need for the County to revise its antiquated notice requirements. You have a right to know about proposed new developments in the vicinity of your neighborhood, and the current standard is clearly insufficient. I have asked County staff to review these notice requirements and report to the Board of Supervisors as soon as possible.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that GRR Land Development has decided to indefinitely defer its asphalt plant proposal. That proposal had been scheduled for June 23, 2009. While that is a step in the right direction, I intend to speak with GRR and ask them to permanently withdraw their proposal as well.

I will update you with more information as I receive it.
