SHOCK POLL: Corey Stewart Surges Past Gillespie in Race for Republican Primary Nomination
Woodbridge, VA - Corey Stewart has surged to the lead in the Republican primary contest for the gubernatorial nomination in Virginia, which will be decided this Tuesday, according to a new poll of 3,232 voters in Virginia.
The poll from Change Research projects Stewart’s lead over former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie at 42-41.
Stewart’s lead can be attributed to the level of enthusiasm in his supporters. 58% of voters who prefer Corey Stewart say they’ll definitely vote for him if they vote, whereas just 38% of voters who prefer former lobbyist Ed Gillespie say they’ll definitely vote for Gillespie if they vote.
Corey Stewart’s rapid rise is largely seen among those Republicans who support for Donald Trump and his agenda.
34% of voters who cite illegal immigration as their greatest concern say they’ll definitely vote for Corey Stewart, whereas only 17% of those voters plan to vote for Gillespie.
Stewart’s surge is led by his enthusiastic base of voters, who are both more likely to vote and less likely to change their minds.
Additionally, 80% of voters who prefer Corey Stewart indicated they’ll definitely vote Tuesday. Only 70% of those who prefer Gillespie say they’ll definitely vote.
Among voters who say they’ll definitely vote Republican, 28% say they’ll definitely vote for Stewart. Of the same set of voters who say they’ll definitely vote Republican, only 19% admit they plan to vote for Ed Gillespie.
The poll was performed by Change Research, the polling firm that correctly called Congressman-elect Greg Gianforte’s big win in Montana last month.
